Walked in this morning, looked through the snail mail and booted up the computer to check my email. A couple of items of note -
First – Dan Marut, who I believe is the founder of the site NewDocs.com about which I have made a few posts sent me an email to correct my mis-perceptions of his site vs. dentaltowne.com. If I have it right, dentaltowne.com is considered a Web 1.0 site and NewDocs is considered Web 2.0
Meaning – if I have it right – that makes NewDocs more of a secure social networking site for dentistry, rather like FaceBook, but without the potential downsides like patients wanting to be your “friend”, or disgruntled patients posting negative comments about your practice.
And, the biggest difference – to me, at least – is that NewDocs is not indexed in anyway, therefore all communications are completely private and cannot be searched by web search engines. I encourage you to check out NewDocs.com, and any feedback you can provide my readers would be welcome.
Second – I just received my first edition of Frank Spear’s magazine, Spear. It’s not a huge publication, but it is jam-packed with articles from Dr. Spear and his associates on everything from restorative material selection to financial planning. There’s also a great article on communicating shades to your laboratory via the correct use of digital photographs.
I’m not sure exactly why I received the magazine – it could be a bonus for having ordered 12 DVDs on various subjects – if you’re interested, you can view the July 2009 edition in PDF format by clicking here.

Ivoclar is offering a great opportunity to learn first-hand about the research behind their claim that e.Max is more durable than veneered zirconia in a 1-hour webinar on October 21, 2009 @ 7pm EST/4pm PST. Dr. Van Thompson, one of the lead researchers for NYU will conduct the program, and participants will earn 1 hour of CE credit – all at no cost!
Click here to get a complete course summary and register.
Now, just for my own edification -
1. I understand that the monolithic nature of e.Max provides superior resistance to fracture for single-tooth applications anywhere in the mouth – what about posterior bridges? Is the material strong enough – specifically in the connectors – or, are we better off using veneered zirconia? And, what exactly does the process of veneering e.Max do to those highly-touted strength numbers?
2. How does e.Max stack up against unveneered zirconia? We’ve done several full-contour units using Crystal zirconia which features a flexural strength in excess of twice that of e.Max. Are there downsides to using all-zirconia? This is interesting because Ivoclar sells their own brand of zirconia – I’d like to see that study side-by-side with a profitability analysis of the two materials…
Maybe someone from Ivoclar would be kind enough to comment?

A couple of months ago, I responded to a survey put out by our trade magazine – Lab Management Today (LMT) regarding marketing methodology for dental laboratories. I subsequently received an “invitation” to have my thoughts on the subject included in an article. To be honest, I was flattered so I gave the go-ahead.
Well, today you can see my mug on page 16 of the September issue of LMT, and there is a follow-up regarding this blog on page 18. Pretty cool stuff for a former “nobody”.
Just to let you know – Here are our stats according to Google Analytics (These numbers are from August 1 when we launched the re-design of the site)

I won’t lie to you and tell you that business has been pouring in as a result of blogging. We have had a few prospective clients reach out to us because they’ve seen us on the web, some of whom we’ve turned into customers. In addition, we’ve had some long time clients who have begun using services which they were previously unaware we provided.
Writing this thing takes a lot of effort. I view the blog as just one element of our marketing effort. Time will tell if the effort will pay dividends. I think I’ll take solace in the number of people we’ve reached in less than 2 months, and in the meantime just keep plugging along…
Thanks for reading! Have a great weekend -
