Introducing “CrownZilla”
May 6, 2010
We’ve had a little bit of confusion with clients with respect to our FCZs vs. PFZs. So, in order to avoid further issues, I am please to announce our new, cutesy name for the Full Contour, Monolithic Zirconia Crowns –
Yeah, its a little goofy, but it should do the job of distinguishing one type of crown from the other. If I can come up with something for the PFZs, I’ll let you know…

10-15 years ago, everyone worried about all-ceramics and their wear characteristics on opposing enamel. It’s interesting that there is all this talk of full contour zirconia and no one seems to worry about wear anymore.
Its my understanding the University of Alabama has done clinical trials and concluded that as long as the occlusal surface is smooth, either as a result of glazing or polishing, the detrimental effects to the opposing dentition are neglible.

Zirconia has very high flexural strength and Fracture toughness value (K1c), but it is not a very hard ceramic. Take Aluminum Oxide, it is much more harder that Zirconia. This is one of the reason’s you will not see the wear on the opposing surface. High Flexural strength and Hardness do not follow similar paths. Take a diamond, very hard….low Mpa, and low K1C value.
